Ontario and Quebec are seeing an increase in the number of patients experiencing an invasive form of group A streptococcus. The illness is common but can be serious when bacteria spreads to the blood or deep tissue and needs to be treated quickly. Dr. Anna Banerji, a pediatric infectious diseases specialist, says that parents should be watching out for a sore throat with a fever and pus, swollen lymph glands, abdominal pain or a headache. Symptoms are more than a typical cold, and people should see a doctor right away.
