Do you have a dog that's been with you for a few years and you want to get a new dog for your family? When getting a new dog, it is important that you introduce the dogs properly. It is a good idea to have the two dogs meet a few times outside your house before bringing the new dog into your home. A dog that's very well socialized could be better to handle, but if your dog is not well socialized, you can still teach him that.
When you introduce the dogs, take them immediately for a walk. The walk is a powerful activity for the dogs because it provides a positive but non-confrontational experience with one another. The experience of walking together could start off their relationship.
Another very important thing to consider is the energy of the old dog and the new dog. If you have an old dog that's been with you for maybe 5 years or more, and then you want to get a new puppy, their energies are most probably mismatched. If so, you need to take the younger dog to do other activities to drain him of the extra energy he has so that when you introduce the dogs, their energies match. If the dogs' energies don't match, they will clash.
Now when you introduce the dogs and they get into a small fight, it doesn't mean that they can never get along with each other. Maybe you just have to walk them a little bit more or be creative in thinking about their activities together and over time they'll eventually learn to co-exist and be friends.
Bringing a new dog into your home takes patience because everyone in the family need to adjust to the new family member. But since you got an old dog in your home already, that means you've already been patient because you've trained your old dog when you got him. You should all be consistent as well in training your new dog.
