As Microsoft bid to buy Activision Blizzard, the company are trying to prove that the developer doesn’t make any “must-have” games. It’s clear why Microsoft would try and play down the importance of Call of Duty to gaming as a whole: by showing lawmakers and regulators that Activision aren’t really a big deal, they can prove there’ll still be competition in the industry, and the purchase should go ahead.
On the other hand Sony have stated to the Brazilian government that CoD is an “essential” AAA game, and one that will sell more consoles to whoever controls it. Sony currently has the rights to Call of Duty, and evidently doesn’t want to lose one of its biggest chart toppers, especially to its biggest rival in the console market. #shorts
