Giving and receiving gifts and hospitality are normal parts of doing business. There’s nothing intrinsically wrong or unethical about giving or receiving gifts. However, this is an area where a lot of unethical situations may arise if you do not abide by strict standards and know exactly where your boundaries are. Let’s start with some definitions. A gift is something that is given to another person to give pleasure or show gratitude. Hospitality is the kind treatment in the form of meals and entertainment offered to guests. Legitimate business gifts typically include mementos, promotional gifts, sample products, souvenirs, items given for special occasions such as birthday presents or holiday baskets. Hospitality includes things such as meals in the normal course of doing business, lodging related to business, entertainment (sporting events, shows, special events), V.I.P. treatment or service. Most companies have limitations on cost and strict guidelines that you should adhere to. Many government institutions allow very limitedly or even no gift-giving at all. Also, your ability to give a gift or provide hospitality may be limited for your position or the position of the person receiving the gift. You should always know the specific boundaries established by your company or organization.
