World Chess Champion Magnus Carlsen of Norway defends his title against challenger Ian Nepomniachtchi of Russia in Game 6 of the 2021 World Chess Championship match that is being held in Dubai. It's a best of 14 games where the first player to earn 7.5 points earns the lion's share (60%) of a $2.24 million prize pool, and the title of "World Chess Champion". What did this game not have! Carlsen played d4 and offered the gambit of a pawn early that Nepomniachtchi declined. Nepomniachtchi was ambitious by opting to damage his kingside structure in order to keep queens on. Carlsen’s queen shortly thereafter left the game in exchange for 2 rooks. Nepomniachtchi mounted serious pressure against Carlsen’s queenside pawns, and acquired a very dangerous passed a-pawn. Nepomniachtchi set many problems for Carlsen to solve and it nearly exhausted every last second of Carlsen’s clock just before making the first time control. Both players were in bullet mode to meet the 1st time control, and blitz mode to meet the 2nd time control. Additional imbalances surfaced, fortresses were possible as a bailout for Carlsen, the game lasted 7 hours and 45 minutes, and in the end Game 6 made history by becoming the longest game ever in World Chess Championship play by reaching move 136. The previous record was set in game 5 of the 1978 title match between Anatoly Karpov and Viktor Korchnoi, which was a 124-move encounter ending in stalemate
