The United Nations was created in 1945, following the devastation of the Second World War, with one central mission: the maintenance of international peace and security. The UN accomplishes this by working to prevent conflict, helping parties in conflict make peace, deploying peacekeepers, and creating the conditions to allow peace to hold and flourish.
The UN General Assembly is like the Super Bowl of global diplomacy. It is the only time that almost every world leader gathers in the same place – at UN HQ in New York in September. But there is so much that goes on behind the scenes. It’s like global diplomacy speed dating. World leaders come in, they talk to each other for a few minutes, they get to know each other. They exchange ideas. They talk through their differences. And that’s when negotiations can happen and progress can be agreed.
