Russia used tanks and howitzers to devastate Ukrainian cities during its invasion on February 24. The largest and most casualty-causing self-propelled howitzer of these weapons is the 2S7 Malka 'Pawn' (Russian for Peony) with a deadly 203mm cannon.
The 2S7 Malka system combines a 203mm 2A44 cannon with a wheeled chassis equipped with steel armor. Kharkiv and Mariupol witnessed the heaviest artillery attacks and Kyiv also fell victim to these attacks.
The weapon was originally known as the 'Pawn' (Russian for peony, a type of flower), but after upgrades to the chassis, engine, ammunition loading system, and controls, the howitzer was renamed the 2S7M 'Malka'. The weapon became operational in 1975 and it is estimated that around 1,000 were built.
The 2S7M Malka artillery system has a firing range of up to 50 km with an average fire rate of 2.5 rounds per minute. The 2S7M Malka system weighs 46 tons and has a crew of seven.
The vehicle carrying the 2S7M Malka system is powered by an 840 hp V-46-I V12 diesel engine that has a maximum speed of 50 km/h with an operating range of 650 km.
