My iceberg rose was only blooming on the top of the canes. After lots of research I’ve learned to train the main canes, which come from the bottom of the plant out of the soil , horizontally and the lateral canes which grow out of the main canes are the lateral canes which the blooms come from on the branch . Therefore look at your plant decide how you want the blooms to grow . I want my blooms mainly on the left grown around the black fence.
As you watched you noticed how i chose the main canes making sure to remove dead, diseased, damaged and crossing.
Always wear protective gloves with the roses with thorns!!!
Have loppers and hand pruners to cut as you go .
To hold the branches i used a eye hook with twine next time ill use rubber coated twist ties it may be easier to control branch.
Rake up under the rose when finished trimming and strip old leaves from plant. The old leaves do not put into compost !
Stand back and admire your hard work and be patient for first blooms!
I will fertilize once I see leaves emerge with a bit of compost and plant tone or rose tone whatever you have on hand!
I learned to also this year prune throughout the season to keep it a bit tidier!
