It is normal for kids to get headaches, and they can have them for many different reasons, and they can range from mild to severe. Just like adults, it's normal to get them with certain triggers. And if you get headaches, then it can be hereditary - your children may get frequent headaches. They can be brought on by stress, things we eat, medications, change in sleep habits, not enough sleep, too much sleep, sitting too long in front of the TV, vision problems. And of course there are a few rare physiological reasons behind it. It's good that you're asking about whether or not 9 year olds should have headaches because like I just said, a lot of times it can be normal, but sometimes there is more to it, and you should watch your child for other concerning symptoms that might accompany the headache. Note the pain level. If it's really severe or it's happening more than once a month, then it would be best to see the doctor, especially if it's debilitating and making it so your child has to come home from school or isn't able to focus or concentrate. Also notice other symptoms that it might be accompanied by, like nausea, vomiting, visual changes, numbness, tingling, fevers, any of those things, and then the doctor might ask you other symptoms as well, if you end up going to the doctor to rule out other possibilities or explanations behind the headache. If you have any other questions for me in the future, feel free to ask them on our Facebook page at Facebook.com/IntermountainMoms, and recommend us to your friends and family too.
