DAVID ELLEFSON was in Milano on March 19th 2019 for “BASSTORY”, a very special, unique, even therapeutic someway, event where he combines music with storytelling about his long and polyhedric career… In this long, revealing and pleasant chat with yours truly BARBARA CASERTA for Linea Rock @ Radio Lombardia Studios, we discuss this experience which puts David in direct contact with his fans and of course much more: the brand new greatest hits "Warheads On Foreheads" (triple cd, four vinyls and a huge book) celebrating 35 years of MEGADETH with 35 selected tracks, and how it was conceived and compiled (addressed more to younger fans or die hards?)… and also coming out same day as Motley Crue “The Dirt" movie on March 22nd 2019, and surprisingly enough he has some curious stories to share about it as well! Get some anticipations on the new Mega-album already in the works (will it be strongly influenced by this revival feeling of the recent remasters and new greatest hits release?). Did he ever lived a sort of interior conflict for being a committed Christian and playing extreme metal music which is not properly religious friendly? And did his family ever complained he was living against the Commandments?... What pushed David to found his own “EMP Label Group” and which is the record that got him proudest so far (so good)?... And been very active and inspired as an artist also with many side projects, to be mainly known as “the” bassist of Megadeth was someway a limit while living the dream of playing in one of the biggest metal bands?... He has always been Mega-Junior, sharing the same name with the Boss since day 1: what else does he thinks he has much in common with Mr Mustaine?... How did he lived the rivalry with METALLICA and is it true he was considered twice to be their bassist but it never happened? The most classic and loved Mega-Line up still remains the Mustaine, Ellefson, Friedman & Menza association, responsible of two masterpiece as “Rust In Peace” and “Countdown To Extinction”: does he shares the same feeling? And what a tricky coincidence that Marty was playing very close, in Cremona, on the same night as David was “basstorying” in Milano: still good friends? “About that bass”: it is a popular belief that true bass players only play using fingers and not the pick (by the way, David used both techniques thru the years) and also that bass players are only “I-wish-I-could-by-I-can’t” guitarists: which Ellefson’s point of view on all that? And what about the thrash-metal-bass-connection with Frank Bello of Anthrax for ALTITUDES & ATTITUDE side project? Any drummer in rock history David wished he could play with? or a bassist that he admires in particular? By the way, the t-shirt I was wearing during this interview marks we share some good taste in music (I'm not gonna spoiler, check it out!)... Winning a Grammy is definitely a life changing experience for any musician? And if rock is dead, which is the future of Metal Music as we love it?
