SAM KINISON made several appearances on Paul Provenza's "COMICS ONLY," one of the then-new Comedy Central network's first original programs. This was his last appearance, just weeks before his death. He also particpated in pre-taping some sketches and clips to be aired as unbilled cameo appearances on later episodes of the series. (One of those aired shortly after his death, and Provenza was able to edit in a voiceover before the clip's airdate stating that Sam had just "come back from the dead" to come back on the show.)
At the time of this taping, which sadly turned out to be his very last television appearance, Sam was successfully emerging from some highly-publicized personal difficulties and controversies (many arising from his controversial appearances on Howard Stern's radio show) as well as drug/alcohol rehab and legal issues. HIs demeanor here suggested to Provenza that Sam was just beginnig a real personal and creative upswing at the time of his death, making the loss that much more tragic for the comedy world. His sudden death fllowing this gives an eery edge to his comments about having to meet God one day.
Provenza still has the guitar pick that Sam gave him in this segment.
NOTE: "Jessica" refers to Jessica Hahn - of televangelist Jim Bakker sex scandal fame - and to Sam's very public dysfuntional relationsihp and acrimonius break up with her.
