Aviation expert demonstrates how a 16-year-old boy stowed away in the nose-wheel compartment of a passenger jet during a flight from California to Hawaii describing his survival as "a bit of a miracle"
A 16-year-old boy who survived unscathed despite freezing temperatures and a lack of oxygen after he stowed away in the wheel well for five-hour flight from California to Hawaii has left medical and aviation experts perplexed at how he managed get on-board unseen and live through his ordeal.
The FBI said that security camera footage had shown the unnamed teenager scaling the perimeter fence at California's San Jose airport on Sunday morning and walking towards a Hawaiian Airlines Boeing 767 that took off shortly afterwards for Kahului airport on Maui island.
Five hours later airline officials said the boy was found dazed but otherwise unhurt wandering on the tarmac at Kahului.
Jon Day, General Manager of southern California Aviation in the Mojave desert, said it the teenager was incredibly lucky to survive.
High altitude and low temperatures knocked the boy out during the flight, and he did not regain consciousness until an hour after the plane landed in Hawaii.
Demonstrating how the boy would have had to crouch down, curl up into the fetal position and hang on for dear life during take-off, he said that he lived through the episode was "a bit of a miracle".
