This is LOUD! One of the final videos I shot at the Avalon International Airshow 2015, two USAF Boeing KC-135R Strato tankers powering up for departure after the show.
This two tankers are based out at Hickham Field Air force base in Honolulu Hawaii, and fly for the Pacific Air Forces 15th wing and the Air National Guard 154th wing.
The Boeing KC-135 Stratotanker is the main aerial refuelling aircraft in the USAF and Air National Guards inventory. First flown in 1956, these aircraft have been a mainstay for over 50 years. The first aircraft departing was built in 1959, with the second built in 1963 (young one!) Despite their age, many of them have very low flight hours, quoting one of the USAF crew members "They where all built & sat around for a cold war that never happened" Originally sporting Pratt and whitney engines like the Boeing 707 (which the KC-135 is heavily based) they have been re-engined with CFM56 engines which provide 50% more fuel uplift, 25% decreased fuel consumption and 96% noise reduction from the original models (I shudder to think how loud they where!)
