On the night of August 29, 2023, a Dearborn, Michigan officer spots a 2007 Chevrolet pickup truck driving 60 miles per hour in a 40-mile zone and having trouble maintaining its lane. Suspecting that the driver might be intoxicated, the officer initiates a stop on the truck. The driver was identified as 44-year-old Joseph Murray, Chief of the Dearborn Fire Department and president of the Southeastern Michigan Association of Fire Chiefs. Joseph was slurring his words and having trouble concentrating on what the officer was saying. The officer asked him how much he’d had to drink, to which he responded that he’d had four or five beers. He was asked to step out of the vehicle so he could execute some field sobriety tests.
During the horizontal gaze nystagmus test, Joseph had to be corrected multiple times for moving his head. On the walk-and-turn test, the suspect didn’t walk heel-to-toe at all and didn’t count aloud consistently throughout. When Joseph attempted to lift his foot for the one-leg-stand test, he immediately stumbled and fell over. The officers then requested that he take a breathalyzer test, to which he repeatedly refused, saying he wanted to wait for a lawyer. The Chief was placed under arrest and charged with driving under the influence and refusing to submit to a chemical test. He was immediately placed on administrative leave following the incident. No updates have been given on the status of his employment.
