Armadillos aren't exactly warm and cuddly, but they certainly don't look threatening. But news from one US state is highlighting one way these animals might be dangerous.
Florida has seen an increase in cases of leprosy this year. This increase is believed to be due to human contact with armadillos, reports CNN.
The Florida Department of Health noted that while the state usually sees between two and 12 cases of the disease annually, nine cases have already been reported so far in 2015, according to CNN.
Leprosy, also called Hansen's disease, is an infection that can affect various part of the body and cause symptoms like skin lesions, skin growths, pain, numbness, paralysis, eye problems, nosebleeds and ulcers on the feet. The disease can be treated with antibiotics once it is identified, but symptoms might not develop for several years after the initial infection.
