i24NEWS DESK | Story (related): Blue and White alliance chief and Knesset (Israel Parliament) Speaker Benny Gantz addressed the lawmakers Tuesday, on Holocaust Remembrance Day in Israel, urging unity.
In his opening remarks, delivered after sirens brought the whole of Israel to a standstill for two minutes in a nation-wide moment of silence, he said that memory of the Holocaust was enshrined in Israel's very essence.
"The State of Israel was not founded because of the Holocaust, but it carries a commitment to its victims in its DNA," Gantz said, adding that he himself grew up in a village founded by Holocaust survivors.
He told the Knesset members that "it is our duty as elected representatives to keep Israel strong," adding that to do so, they must work together.
Unity, Gantz stressed, was his mission and motivation for joining politics.
Earlier, on Monday, Gantz signed an emergency government deal with Israel's caretaker Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, after months of deadlock on the country's political scene.
The agreements, which provides for 36 ministerial posts -- the highest number in years -- predictably drew mixed reactions, with Gantz's former allies in the Blue and White camp lashing out against it.
