Jin Ping Mei (which is Brendan's specialty) will be our window on Chinese society and culture. An infamously lurid novel—despite its enduring popularity, it has been officially banned for most of the 400+ years since its publication—it tells the story of Ximen Qing, a corrupt merchant and social climber, and chronicles his moral decline and the inevitable collapse of his house.
Brendan will give an intro to the novel in this livestream. Even for those not taking the course, it should be very interesting!
