Welcome to the Fortunoff Video Archive’s web series Songs from Testimonies. This first season, “Where Is Our Homeland?”, features songs from the first volume of recordings produced by the archive’s Musician-in-Residence D. Zisl Slepovitch. Episode 9 features Polish Army Songs. This song combines two smaller pieces, the antisemitic “They Drafted a Poor Jew” and the frivolous “A Gray Dove.” Both were recalled in the testimony of Jack M. (HVT-1555). Jack M. learned these two songs while he was serving in the Polish army. Both songs were quite popular in his regiment and were likely composed by his fellow soldiers and officers. Listen to the song from the original testimony, a performance by the Zisl Slepovitch Ensemble & Sasha Lurje, as well as commentary by Dr. D. Zisl Slepovitch and Dr. Antony Polonsky, Professor Emeritus of Holocaust Studies at Brandeis University. For more information see songsfromtestimonies.org.
