Limerence is a term used in psychology that relates to the state of being infatuated or obsessed with another person. It is typically an involuntary feeling characterized by a strong desire for reciprocity. It is not solely driven by a sexual desire (Grainger, 2021). Limerence is a longing, a chasing, a lusting for someone.
The 3 Stages of Limerence
1. Infatuation
2. Crystallization
3. Deterioration
How can you know the difference between limerence and love?
1. Limerence lacks a mutual connection.
2. You desire the person even though they may not be a good fit for you.
3. You overlook the person's character flaws and shortcomings.
4. You neglect yourself for them - their needs take priority over your needs (MacKenzie, 2021).
