Karl Benz created the automobile in 1883, but some companies had been created before then that would get into the automotive industry later on. All of these automakers have made it through the initial boom of the automobile in the early 1900s, the Roaring Twenties and Great Depression, WW1 and WW2, and emerged into the modern era to create the massive brands that they are today.
