Learn about the disaster services provided by the American Red Cross and how their services can help people with disabilities prepare for, and recover from, disasters. When a disaster occurs, the American Red Cross works to support people with disabilities so they can maintain their independence in the least restrictive setting and maintain optimal health. For example, shelter facilities are assessed for accessibility, disaster mental health services are made available, and a Disability Integration Advisor provides expertise on disability integration, equal access, inclusion, and functional needs support.
The American Red Cross provides disaster relief services all day, every day, where ever needed, so people can have clean water, safe shelter, and hot meals when they need them the most. The purpose of the American Red Cross is to meet the immediate disaster-caused needs of individuals, families, and communities.
This session is part of the first-ever Disaster Resilience Awareness Month. Throughout the month of March, Disability Rights Texas will team up with its partner Equal Justice Works to spread awareness about disaster-related legal challenges and share resources for disaster preparedness and recovery efforts.
