In this video, I discuss Ming Dynasty General Qi Jiguang's (戚繼光) take on the usefulness or uselessness of unarmed martial arts in his "Essentials of the Fist" (拳經) where he states:
拳法似無預於大戰之技,然活動手足,慣勤肢體,此為初學入藝之門也
"Fist methods provide seemingly no use in preparing for battlefield techniques. Yet exercising the hands and feet and constantly working the limbs are the first lesson when entering into the [martial] arts."
