STORYLINE:
Russian Orthodox Christians held their traditional Epiphany baptism ceremony in Moscow on Wednesday.
Braving freezing temperatures and thick snow, the swimmers plunged into an icy pool, cut in the shape of the cross.
The ceremony commemorates the baptism of Jesus Christ by John the Baptist in the River Jordan.
Swimming in icy rivers is a long-observed Russian tradition, and those who brave it are nicknamed "walruses".
