Many people will know the saying “buy cheap, buy twice” and, because many sayings have a grain of truth to them, we wanted to see if it also applies to the topic of cutting discs. Recently, one of our colleagues found 10 cutting discs on offer for 5 euros in a cut-price store, so they bought them to be looked at by our applications engineers. We’d just launched the XT70 EXTENDED, an update in our entry-level line offering 20% more performance, and so we wanted to see how the extra-thin ALPHAline cutting disc would do in a head-to-head against the cheap cutting disc. In terms of price, the RHODIUS XT70 EXTENDED costs EUR 1.29 (RRP), much more than the other – but might the cheap cutting disc also be a bargain? The RHODIUS cutting disc, designed and produced in Germany, has of course been manufactured to the stringent safety and quality requirements from the oSa (Organisation for the Safety of Abrasives). We tested both 1 mm cutting discs on a 1,550 W angle grinder, which we then used to cut SR37 ∅ 16 mm structural steel. While the bargain-basement cutting disc had effectively disintegrated after just 5.5 cuts, we easily managed to complete over 40 cuts with the XT70 EXTENDED. While inexpensive at first sight, this makes the cheap cutting disc actually three times as expensive as the RHODIUS-brand product.
