This is a webinar titled "Malaysia is Not a 'Garbage Dump': Challenges in the Global Plastic Waste Trade and Ways Forward" co-organised by C4 Center and Sahabat Alam Malaysia on 16 March 2021.
This webinar was held in conjunction with the launch of C4 Center Special Report titled "Malaysia is not a "Garbage Dump": Citizens against corruption, complacency, crime, and climate crisis".
China banned 24 types of solid waste imports to the country in January 2018, including plastic waste. This led to a sudden surge in imported and smuggled plastic waste entering Malaysia that year. Illegal dumpsites and factories continue to impact our environment, pollute our air, and cause health problems for nearby communities.
What are the challenges faced in managing problems arising from the global waste trade? What is the impact of foreign plastic waste in Malaysia? What are the solutions? Should countries ban the export of plastic waste?
