Tanks carrying Russian-backed troops were seen driving through the Donetsk region on Sunday (May 22), as Russia stepped up its attacks on Donbas and the Mykolayiv region of Ukraine.
Several of the tanks were painted with “Z” – a symbol heavily associated with the Russian military since the February 24 invasion of Ukraine. One tank was also painted with the word “Russia” in Cyrillic.
Ukraine's general staff said on Sunday that Russian forces were trying to break through Ukrainian defences to reach the administrative borders of the Luhansk region, while further north they continued heavy shelling of Sievierodonetsk and Lysychansk.
Russian-backed separatists already controlled parts of Luhansk and the neighbouring Donetsk province before the invasion, but Moscow wants to seize the remaining Ukrainian-held territory in the region.
