Before the ancient Greeks settled in the area, the Aegean sea was the home to several cultures who flourished beginning around 2500 years before. The Cycladic culture occupying the Cyclades island, the Minoans on the island of Crete and the Myceneans of mainland Greece crafted art and architecture that showed influence form Egypt and Mesopotamia, but displayed distinct characteristics of its own.
