We see the baby's sex usually after about 15 weeks. Here the diagnosis of a baby boy is made earlier.

Please note that earlier in gestation, the gender can be misdiagnosed and thus be a reason for parent frustration especially for some moms and fathers for whom the sex of the baby is very important. There are cases where some parents go and buy things for their babies the same day the gender is "determined", although the doctor says explicitly that it is not 100 percent. This is the reason why most doctors don't tell the sex unless they are 100 percent sure about it. So it is wise to wait, be patient and not push the doctor to make an estimation.

Earlier in my career, there was a couple who insisted that I tell them the gender. I made them a joke and said: "50 percent boy". Their reaction to this was: "Why did he not say not 50 percent girl? It is indeed really a boy, he is sure about it!" Their fulfilled expectation made them blind to the fact that there are only two genders possible and you don't have to make an ultrasound to tell this. This was the first and last time that I used this "joke".
