Dr. Halum shared that she grew up in a family that had a great appreciation for singing. “As I grew into adulthood, I became interested in voice on every level — how we communicate, connect, and relay emotions through our voice. Then when I started my otolaryngology residency, and discovered the option of going into laryngology, I knew that was my future. Each of my mentors through the years have added a new perspective and given me additional appreciation for the importance of voice.” In regard to her patients, Dr. Halum said, “My co-laryngologists and I always say how our spasmodic dysphonia patients are the kindest, most cooperative patients we have, and we wish everyone would be like them. For what they have to endure, they complain very little, and are always willing to help us ‘advance the cause’, even if it doesn’t directly help them.”
