City Description:
Townsville is a coastal city in northeastern Queensland, Australia. The Strand esplanade, with its pier and water park, is popular. The Reef HQ Aquarium has marine life and coral from the Great Barrier Reef, plus a sea turtle hospital. Southeast of the city, the Billabong Sanctuary wildlife park is home to koalas, wombats and crocodiles. Offshore, Magnetic Island has coral reefs and a national park full of wildlife. In the town centre, the Museum of Tropical Queensland has natural history exhibits and relics from the British warship HMS Pandora. Also in town is Castle Hill, a giant pink-granite landmass with trails and lookout points across the water. To the southwest, the Palmetum botanical garden has hundreds of varieties of palm trees and water features attracting birds. Northwest of Townsville is Cape Pallarenda Conservation Park, with its abundant wildlife, disused quarantine station and Shelly Beach. In the southwest, the Riverway parkland has artificial lagoons for swimming and an arts centre.
Weather and Events:
Townsville has a tropical climate, with hot summers (Dec–Feb) and warm, dry winters (Jun–Sep). Wet season (Dec–Mar) has unpredictable rainfall with occasional severe thunderstorms. Marine stingers are generally present in Northern Queensland waters Oct–Jun and reach their peak during the summer and autumn months (Dec–May).
