The census started in 1790 and was carried out through the US marshals, and later it went to the US office of commerce. Even with the tumultuous past as it relates to Black people, in present times, some of us have been able to look back at the census and trace family lines.
Recently, on social media, I came across the campaign for Latinoisnotarace.info on @blactina ‘s page and as much as I stay involved in the community, I could not believe that I had no idea what was going on with the racial categories on the census. I barely understood the depth of the importance of these categories as it relates to our community.
When I don’t know, I always try to seek the information with those who have better knowledge. This led me to converse with Dr. Tonya Hernandez.
In this video, we discuss the Census and the specific relation to the Latino community and the OMB, that is trying to turn an ethnicity into a racial category.
Hearing the OMB talk about their reasoning, makes it clear that they have no idea what a Latino is, what a nationality is, and that race does exist outside of the United States
