This video is about the evolution of Toyota Prius from 1997 to 2023.
The Toyota Prius has a hybrid drivetrain, combining an internal combustion engine with an electric motor. Initially offered as a four-door sedan, it has been produced only as a five-door liftback since 2003.
First generation (XW10; 1997-2003):
In 1995, Toyota debuted a hybrid concept car at the Tokyo Motor Show which later went on sale on 10 December 1997. The revolution was under the hood, where a 1.5-liter gasoline engine was parallel mounted to an electric motor. Both were mated to the same CVT gearbox.
NHW11 (2000–2003):
The Prius NHW11 (sometimes referred to as "Generation 2) was the first Prius sold by Toyota outside of Japan, with sales in limited numbers beginning in the year 2000 in Asia, America, Europe and Australia. The Prius was offered in the US in three trim packages: Standard, Base, and Touring.
Second generation (XW20; 2003-2009):
The second generation Prius had been completely redesigned. Toyota Hybrid System 1.5 Litre engine producing 110hp with transmission 1-speed planetary gear system. Prius makes use of a 201.6-volt NiMH battery composed of 28 modules.
Third generation (XW30; 2009-2015):
The third generation Toyota Prius debuted as a compact liftback launched in 2009 for model year 2010. The 1.8-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine generates (98 hp), and with the added power of the electric motor 20 kW producing total134 hp.
Fourth generation (XW50; 2015-2022):
The fourth-generation Prius was designed to deliver significantly improved fuel economy in a more compact package. it has 1.8 Litre (gasoline hybrid) engine with dual motor generator system having Planetary gear eCVT transmission. The vehicle features smaller electric motors, with higher power density. In late November 2018, for the 2019 model year, the U.S. market Prius lineup introduced an all-wheel drive model featuring Toyota's E-Four system, that adds a motor to the rear axle.
Facelift 2018:
The Prius received a facelift with redesigned headlights and tail lights, which was released in Japan on 17 December 2018.
Fifth generation (XW60; 2022-Present):
The fifth-generation Prius was unveiled on 16 November 2022, with two powertrain options. The first uses Toyota's Series Parallel Hybrid System, available in 1.8-litre and 2.0-litre variants producing 138 hp. This model is also available with E-Four all-wheel drive system. The second, a plug-in hybrid, combines a 2.0-litre engine, an electric motor and lithium-ion batteries to produce a combined output 220 hp.
