As part of our Behind the Scenes series covering the 73rd Session of the United Nations General Assembly, we have reached out to different departments within the United Nations to get their take on what makes the General Assembly such a special time of year.

In this series you'll meet staff members from all over the world, learn more about their departments and hear how they came to work at the United Nations. You'll also get to see all of the hard work that goes on behind the scenes of the General Assembly, and see how each department prepares for what has been described as the "World Cup of Diplomacy."

Here you’ll get to meet Senior Spanish Interpreter Mélida Buendía. She shares her experiences from working in the Spanish interpreter’s booth for almost 20 years, and what it feels like to have her voice heard on the world stage during the busiest time of year at the United Nations. She also shares with us some of her favorite memories from the UNGA...spoiler alert they include Shakira and Pope Francis!
