Performed by Christian Dillig (piano)
This tango from Astor Piazzolla (1921 - 1992) is from a cycle of four tangos - called La Suite del Ángel - to a theater play by Alberto Rodriguez Muñoz. The pieces are called Introducción del Ángel, Milonga del Ángel, La Muerte del Ángel y Resurrección del Ángel. Piazzolla composed the suite beginning with the present tango between 1962 and 1965 in the creative phase after his return from Paris. He shows himself here influenced not only by traditional tango music but also by Bach and by jazz, two musical pillars that particularly interested Piazzolla since his youth. The original composition actually begins with a three-part fugue. With the wild rhythms and jagged harmonies in the opening section, Piazzolla was initially rejected in Argentina before gaining increasing recognition with his music. Some more information about Piazzolla and his tangos can be found in my video on Tango Final www.youtube.com/watch?v=aV7RWfuQkXM
The score is from the anthology "Tango Nuevo For Piano Solo Vol. 1", published by the German publisher TONOS Darmstadt, and it is still available there. It is an appealing collection of 10 newer tango compositions or compositions influenced by tango by the Argentinian composers Astor Piazzolla, Pablo Ziegler, Rodolfo Mederos, Saúl Cosentino, Osvaldo Requena and Miguel A. Varvello. I have recorded from the volume so far:
