With the great success of “Casablanca,” this old tune jumped to #1 on the weekly “Your Hit Parade” radio survey in the Spring of ’43, but due to the ongoing ‘Recording Ban’ (musicians union strike) the only commercial 78s available to consumers at the time were reissues of two old 1931 recordings by the orchestras of Rudy Vallee [ Ссылка ] and Jacques Renard [ Ссылка ] . Though Dooley Wilson had performed it as ‘Sam’ in the film, he was unable to capitalize on the moment and had to wait until 10½ months after the movie opened to make this recording, shortly after Decca settled with the union.
78rpm single issued on Decca 40006 - As Time Goes By (Herman Hupfeld) by Dooley Wilson with piano and rhythm, recorded in Los Angeles October 11, 1943 .
