New VW Tiguan AllSpace 2019 Review Interior Exterior.
The Tiguan Allspace is an independent version of the most successful SUV made in Germany, with up to 7 seats and more luggage space. An extended wheelbase and greater overall length make the Tiguan Allspace a most spacious SUV: by folding down the backrests of the second row of seats, the cargo space available can be boosted from 760 liters to as much as 1,920 liters. The Tiguan Allspace also offers more comprehensive standard equipment; this underlines the model’s positioning between the standard-wheelbase Tiguan and the exclusive Touareg.
Volkswagen’s new Tiguan Allspace is based on the successful Tiguan sport utility vehicle. The key differences between the two models is the Tiguan Allspace’s greater overall length and extended wheelbase, which together offer enough space to significantly increase the boot capacity and even include a third row of occasional seats.
Like the ‘classic’ Tiguan, the new Tiguan Allspace is built on Volkswagen’s MQB (Modularer Querbaukasten) architecture. The versatility of this platform is once again showcased by the ability of the Tiguan Allspace to maintain the engaging driving characteristics of the regular model yet also provide more space and flexibility.
What that means for the Tiguan Allspace is a wheelbase that’s 109 mm longer than the Tiguan. To be precise, it has increased from 2,681 mm to 2,787 mm. This leads to a total length of 4,071 mm, which is an increase of 215 mm over the Tiguan. The resulting interior volume gives plenty of room for a third row of seats. This row is ideally suited to people up to 5 foot 2 inches tall and, in the UK, it is included as standard.
Therefore the Tiguan Allspace sits above the regular Tiguan as a separate vehicle in the comprehensive Volkswagen range. In extending its line-up of vehicles Volkswagen expects to attract new customers to the brand. From its launch in June 2016 to the end of December 2017, more than 40,000 units of the second generation Tiguan had been sold in the UK. In total, since the original Tiguan was launched in February 2008, more than 140,000 Tiguans have found a home in the UK.
Versatility is an important word in describing the new Tiguan Allspace. More luggage space is available when the third row of seats is folded and the capacity increases further when the middle row is also folded down. Five adults can fit comfortably in the car, with suitcases too. With five people in the car there is 700 litres of luggage space . With the middle and rear rows of seats folded the luggage space increases to a total of 1,775 litres, which means items such as surfboards can be loaded into the rear of the car with ease. With all seven seats in place, the boot still measures 230 litres.
In addition to creating a spacious interior for the Tiguan Allspace, Volkswagen designers have reworked the styling of the car so that the larger proportions retain the sculpted exterior of its smaller sibling. It features a sweeping front end and a unique silhouette, with a new roof design too. The dramatic appearance echoes the larger Atlas SUV sold in the American market.
Volkswagen’s advanced petrol and diesel engines power the Tiguan Allspace. The line-up contains five turbocharged engines, two petrol and three diesel. The petrol options include the 1.4-litre TSI 150 PS unit with Active Cylinder Technology (ACT). This means that two of the four cylinders shut down when the Tiguan Allspace is cruising, to further enhance fuel economy. This engine is available in front-wheel drive and six-speed manual gearbox configuration only.
The second petrol engine is mated to Volkswagen’s high-tech 4MOTION four-wheel drive system. The 2.0-litre TSI unit has an output of 180 PS. Drive comes exclusively via a seven-speed DSG automatic gearbox.
Greater power is provided by the 190 PS unit, which is only available with 4MOTION four-wheel drive and a seven-speed DSG gearbox. The most powerful Tiguan Allspace engine is the 2.0-litre TDI with an output of 240 PS; this is also equipped with a 4MOTION four-wheel drive system and a seven-speed DSG gearbox. In terms of the sales split between 4MOTION and two-wheel drive, the ratio is very close to 1:1 in the regular Tiguan and this is expected to be the same in the Tiguan Allspace.
Three high-spec trim levels comprise the Tiguan Allspace range – SE Navigation, SEL and R-Line. This is in contrast to the regular Tiguan, which begins with the S and SE trims. For the Tiguan Allspace it’s SE Navigation that marks the entry point.
Every Tiguan Allspace is equipped with three rows of seats and an electric tailgate. All feature Volkswagen’s Discover Navigation infotainment system that comprises an 8.0-inch colour touchscreen and a variety of navigation options. Also included is DAB digital radio, a CD player, a Bluetooth mobile phone connection for two devices and two USB connections.
