Our 3rd day in Iceland began waking up in our hotel just outside of Vik. We ate like royalty that morning from their amazing complimentary breakfast.
The first stop of the day was on a hike to see Svartifoss, a waterfall well known for the basalt columns surrounding it, in the Vatnajokull National Park. Along the trail we even caught a glimpse of another waterfall named Hundafoss. Svartifoss was probably a 1.5 hour hike round trip, but counting the actual time we were at the waterfall made it a 2-hour excursion.
The rest of our day centered around ice. The original glacier lookout point we were going to was closed due to a rockslide, so we went to the next one we saw. We aren't exactly sure what the location is named, but the glacier we saw was a part of the Vatnajokull ice cap, the biggest glacier in Iceland. It was probably the highlight of our day since we were able to be up close to the ice and even sit on the big ice chunks! After Vatnajokull, we drove to Diamond Beach. Diamond Beach is a black sand beach that has pieces of glacial ice that wash ashore that resemble diamonds! Definitely beautiful and a great place for pictures. Our last icey location was the glacier lagoon or Jokulsarlon which is pretty much across the road from Diamond Beach. The water's color in the lagoon was unreal. It was a very calm icey, almost smokey blue. We even got to see a few seals playing around while we were there. Due to their close proximity to each other, this spot in Southern Iceland is a popular spot for tours. Also a popular spot for whale watching tours that go out onto the glacier lagoon.
Just when we thought the adventure was over, we saw a beautiful waterfall along the ring road named Barkinafoss. It was so magical because we were the only people in sight and we could get really close to it. It was a great break between the 5 hour drive to our Airbnb in the East Fjords. Even though it was the longest distance we had to drive in one go during our trip, it was an incredible experience just seeing the Icelandic scenery slowly change from rocks and gravel everywhere to large mountains and fjords. We even got lucky and saw a reindeer too!
We arrived at our Airbnb in Neskaupstadur, a fishing town in the East Fjords, late around 8pm. It was a very charming and rustic Airbnb that became one of our favorites despite the smell of the nearby fish processing plant.
