In this final video on Coordination, I zoom in on plants. Just like humans and other animals, plants have hormones and electrical communication systems that enable them to respond appropriately to stimuli. The Venus flytrap is an example of a carnivorous plant whose coordination system allows it to digest insects that land on its nectar. The trap is designed in a way that allows it to respond only to stimuli that occur within five seconds of each other and also only to certain insect sizes. This way, the trap saves energy by only digesting insects that are big enough and only closing when the stimuli are appropriately time-distanced.
