Dr. Gauger is a Professor of Surgery in the Section of General Surgery. Dr. Gauger trained in General Surgery at the University of Michigan where he also completed fellowships in Extracorporeal Life Support and Surgical Critical Care. It was here that he developed a strong interest in endocrine surgery. After graduation, he served as the T.S. Reeve International Fellow in Endocrine Surgery at the Royal North Shore Hospital in Sydney, Australia. He returned to Michigan in 1999 to join the faculty of the Division of Endocrine Surgery.
Dr. Gauger serves as the Program Director for General Surgery and is involved in multiple Graduate Medical Education issues throughout the institution. Dr. Gauger was the founding Executive Director of the University of Michigan Clinical Simulation Center - a multidisciplinary educational resource devoted to development and assessment of procedural skills and other high level patient care skills and team-based skills necessary for clinical competency.
Dr. Gauger's current clinical research interests include intraoperative parathyroid hormone monitoring, adrenal imaging and surgery, and management of Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia Type I pancreaticoduodenal disease. His current educational research interests include surgical skill training curricula and assessments and evaluation of Professionalism in surgical trainees.
