Diabetes and Tech – Managing Diabetes With New Technology Opportunities with Dr Jackie Elliot and Dr Astha Soni on 21 April 2022 by Zoom
The Diabetes UK Sheffield group were pleased to host another excellent talk by Dr Jackie Elliot, diabetes consultant and academic with the Sheffield Teaching Hospitals Trust. Dr Elliot opened the presentation by summarising the latest NICE guidelines regarding use of technology applicable to Type 1 and 2 diabetes patients. NICE published their guidance only a few weeks before the meeting and now all Type 1 qualify for either Freestyle Libre 2 flash monitoring or Dexcom 6 continuous glucose monitoring. Studies have shown the benefits and cost effectiveness of the technology for patients and the NHS beyond doubt. Patients have increased levels of glucose control and greater “Time in Range” (TIR).
The technology allows the patient to easily monitor blood glucose levels, without finger pricking, by scanning with a reader or smart phone. The software also provides a range of information such as trends, TIR, predicted HBa1C results, etc. Data can be shared with a carer or Health Care Professional improving advice and support to the patient.
Dr Astha Soni: continuous monitoring is common for children with additional use of pumps making inroads. Some of the tech is not licensed for very young children but this is related to the very small data sets availble.
