Jason Allen was nearly too frightened to compete in his first art show. His award-winning artwork has sparked debate on whether art can be made by a machine and what it means to be an artist.
Allen, a game creator from Pueblo West, Colorado, received first prize in the "digital arts and digitally-manipulated photography" category of the Colorado State Fair Fine Arts Competition in August. His winning picture, "Space Opera Theater", was created using Midjourney, an artificial intelligence system that can generate detailed graphics when given textual cues. His victory came with a $300 award.
