Recently purchased the Scourge of War Series of games, both the Gettysburg 150th Anniversary pack and the most recent game, Scourge of War-Waterloo.
The games are based on taking large formations, from as low as battalion, brigade level all the way up to the Army level and utilizing Command and Control aspects of maneuvering and fighting said formations in an era when muzzle loading muskets and rifled-muskets were in use.
Some people will be put off by the lower level of graphics compared to the big games like the Total War series but there is so much more going on under the hood of these games it boggles the mind.
This game-simulator really gives one the sense of how hard and disciplined one had to be in order to command and control such large formations of soldiers. Getting them from point A to point B in a timely manner and not have units strung out along several miles by the time you meet the enemy is amazingly hard. Top that with the fact that your units will not change orders until you send them your orders via a courier system which builds in real time delays to the fight just like in the real battles at the time.
These particular series of video scenes are from a recent sandbox battle I was fighting in order to learn the command and control aspects of the game and trying to understand how to maneuver and fight a formation of Division size against a force of equal size commanded by the AI.
I was fighting as overall commander of the 5th British Infantry Division against a French Division commanded by the AI. I for the most part left my Regiment and Brigade Commanders under my friendly AI control and just concentrated on giving them overall orders like where I wanted them to position, hold position or advance or fall back etc.
A few times I took direct control of the small Brigades in order to position them in particular spots etc. All this through the courier system implemented in the game. You will see couriers running from my unit representing me to the Regimental Commander and then couriers going from him to his Brigade commanders getting my orders to the troops on the ground in the lines. And there is no guarantee they will obey my orders depending on the character and experience of their direct commanders, along with morale, fatigue levels etc. Simply a very deep simulator.
This is an amazing detailed, deep game. I highly recommend it to anyone who is interested in military history of the Napoleonic era.
The game is developed by NorbSoftDev.
Hope you enjoy.
