Old photos of Iranian women in western attire often draws a contrast with the compulsory hijab enforced by the Islamic regime in 1979. The death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini in police custody after her arrest over "improper hijab" in September has fueled massive protests that refuse to die down, bringing the world's attention to Iranian women's agony. While Iranian women are forced to wear hijab under the current Islamic rule, there was a time when wearing hijab for women was not even an option and those who did do so were beaten on the streets. Watch how the Shahs and the Mullahs of Iran have denied women the right to choose their clothes.
