Nicolás Maduro Moros, President of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, addresses the general debate of the 75th Session of the General Assembly of the UN (New York, 22 – 29 September 2020).
In a video message, Venezuela’s President Nicolás Maduro today (23 Sep) told the General Assembly’s General Debate that in Venezuela “there all the necessary guarantees to hold the parliamentary elections.”
Maduro said, “that is why we have invited the world to join us, to be witnesses of a living democracy, nothing and nobody will be able to take away from the Venezuelan People the right to elect the new Legislative Power, since this is a fundamental tool for collective existence and will be an expression of the will of the original power.”
Venezuela, he said, “is under constant attack,” by the United States, “in the media field, in the political field, in the economic field; we have even been threatened with direct military aggressions.”
Maduro said, “the unilateral measures imposed by the Government of the United States of America have tried to subdue the Venezuelan people.”
The Venezuelan President’s comments were pre-recorded and aired in the General Assembly Hall as previously agreed by the General Assembly in light of the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite the inability to gather world leaders in New York as customary, this year’s General Debate will witness the largest-ever participation of heads of states and government in UN history.
