To be perfectly clear, these rapids are incredibly dangerous and I do not take this swim lightly at all. The hydraulic I was stuck in carries significant potential to kill you if you make a mistake as I did. Fortunately, our safety team was well set up, and I was acutely aware of their relative location, throughout the course of my beatdown. My decision to get out of my kayak when I did was directly due to the fact that I had made eye contact with the safety, seen they were ready, knowing that I was not going to be able to surf out of the hydraulic, and my perception that I was positioned in such a way that I could quickly receive a rope from them. Huge thank you to all who were part of the safety crew, and the other racers who helped retrieve me and my gear.
