The Mercedes-Benz Concept CLA-Class, which was unveiled at the Munich IAA 2023. The vehicle is a part of Mercedes-Benz's new electric-first compact car platform based on the Mercedes-Benz Modular Architecture (MMA). The Concept CLA-Class is designed with sustainability in mind, featuring interior materials like Nappa leather tanned using coffee husks and fabric made from recycled PET plastic. The car is estimated to have a range of 466 miles according to the WLTP scale.
The exterior of the Concept CLA-Class is a blend of classic and modern design elements. It retains the "four-door coupe" shape that has been a hallmark of the CLA nameplate but adds a longer hood and shorter rear deck for sportier proportions. The vehicle also features a bold grille element and three-dimensional, illuminated stars that give it a jewelry-like appearance. The car's design language, termed "Sensual Purity," is evident in its sleek bodysides and curved rear end.
Inside, the car borrows heavily from the Vision EQXX concept, particularly in its high-tech Superscreen infotainment system. This system comprises three separate displays and is powered by MB.OS, Mercedes-Benz's new operating system. The OS features a liquid-cooled processor for faster operation and improved functionality. The car also incorporates sustainable materials like lab-grown silk and bamboo floor mats.
As for the powertrain, the Concept CLA-Class is still in the conceptual stage, but it offers a glimpse into what the series-production model might feature. The car is expected to have two different battery types: lithium-ion phosphate for entry-level models and silicon-oxide anodes for higher energy density in flagship models. The battery cells are held in place using adhesive instead of screws, which saves weight and offers better structural integrity.
Mercedes-Benz estimates the car to have an energy consumption of 5.2 miles per kilowatt-hour, translating to a battery with 89.6 kWh of usable capacity. The vehicle will also feature 800-volt electrical architecture, allowing for 250-kilowatt DC fast charging capability. This means it could add an estimated 248 miles of range in just 15 minutes.
The Concept CLA-Class will feature a Mercedes-Benz Electric Drive Unit (MB.EDU), which integrates the electric motor, two-speed transmission, and associated inverters and electronics. Each unit weighs 243 pounds and puts out 235 horsepower. The use of rare-earth metals in the MB.EDU is significantly less than in previous Mercedes motors, aligning with the company's sustainability goals.
The MMA platform on which the Concept CLA-Class is based will also spawn at least three other variants besides the CLA, including two crossovers and a station wagon. These vehicles will likely offer internal combustion powertrains as well, although the electric variant is expected to arrive first.
Pricing details for the Concept CLA-Class and its variants are yet to be determined. Mercedes-Benz has been candid about the fact that it will likely be some time before electric vehicles achieve cost parity with internal combustion automobiles.
The Concept CLA-Class is slated to hit the market by the end of 2024. Until then, the concept will serve as a preview of what's to come, not just for the CLA but for the entire range of vehicles that will be based on the MMA platform.
