We are traveling back in time over 4,000 years ago to the Palace of Knossos in Crete. Crete is Greece’s largest island and 5th largest island in the Mediterranean.
The Minoan people occupied this land and are thought to be the oldest civilization in Europe. They built the Palace of Knossos in Heraklion and today we uncover the captivating mysteries and mythology.
The Palace of Knossos was restored by archaeologist Sir Arthur Evans and aimed to interpret many of the palace's rooms, features, frescoes, and mythological elements. There is a labyrinth and a Minotaur, a monster with a bull's head. Additionally, a mysterious snake goddess figurine was found on the palace grounds.
The palace also had many innovations, including what is thought to be the first flushing toilet, drainage, and pipes of fresh water. The 1,300-room palace boasts many other frescos and painted columns. One of the most famous frescos depicts a scene of acrobatic “bull leaping.”
One of the main rooms in the Palace of Knossos is the Throne Room, an intimate setting that can hold no more than thirty people at a time. It’s unpretentious but holds a mythical otherworldly mystique at the same time. Murals cover the walls and depict griffins, a mythical combination of an eagle (or hawk) and a lion. Theories of the purpose of the room range from religious to political to astronomical.
