The collapse of the Champlain Towers in Surfside, Florida, has brought together an army of heroes determined to assist with the excruciating search and recovery mission.
Searching through the mountain of concrete and debris, you will find New Jersey's Task Force One (NJ-TF1); one of the 28 FEMA Urban Search and Rescue teams deployed to assist with the rescue and recovery efforts.
"We have provided Florida with the best of the best our state has to offer in the search and rescue world," said Kevin Morrissey, Program Manager of the New Jersey Task Force One.
Their extensive and ongoing training as well as their experience responding to disasters like 9/11 and other natural or man-made disasters, has prepared the NJ-TF1 to respond under any given circumstances.
The NJ-TF1, which is deployed and reimbursed by FEMA, is equipped with technical search cameras, acoustical listening devices, lifting and reaching equipment, as well as food, water, medical supplies, and canine supplies.
The task force, which was incorporated into the federal system in September 2016, has over 280 members, which include: law enforcement officers, firefighters, doctors, engineers, and canine search specialists, amongst several others.
Despite the challenging environmental conditions surrounding the mission in Florida, the NJ-TF1 is determined to continue assisting in every way possible.
"Whether it's to free a person or bring closure to a family, I can tell you our folks won't give up and we'll just continue the mission no matter what it is to bring peace to everybody," said Morrissey.
