D-DAY DUMMY THAT FOOLED GERMAN FORCES
This is ‘Device Camouflage No15’ but more commonly known as ‘Rupert’ - a dummy paratrooper dropped to fool German forces in the days leading up to D-Day on June 6, 1944.
Made from simple sacking material and filled with straw, Rupert (or Oscar as the Americans called him) stands around 85cm tall and was deployed in the thousands over occupied France in a bid to confuse the enemy as to where the landings would take place.
This Rupert - complete with original parachute - is one of two examples on display at the Airborne Museum in Sainte Mère Église in Normandy, a town where real paratroopers landed on D-Day.
