Statement by Dr Maria Neira, Director, Department of Environment, Climate Change and Health on the occasion of International Lead Poisoning Prevention Week 2021. The addition of lead and lead compounds to paint continues to provide a source of continuing human exposure to a cumulative toxin, for which there is no known level of exposure which is without harmful effects. As of August 2021, only 43% countries had taken steps to outlaw the addition of lead pigments, driers and other lead-compounds to paint. Alternative additives exist. WHO encourages all governments to put an end to the use of lead in paint.
